HYPOTHERMIA

Occurs when body heat is lost from being in a cold environment faster than it can be replaced.

Signs and Symptoms

Early symptoms include
  • Feeling cold
  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Pale skin
As it progresses, other symptoms may include
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Fumbling hands
  • Unsteady gait
  • Slurred speech
  • Slowed breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Low blood pressure
In severe cases, symptoms may include
  • Slowed or absent heartbeat
  • Dilated pupils
  • Rigid and stiff muscles
  • Skin that feels ice cold and appears blue
  • Slow, shallow, or absent breathing
  • Coma
  • Person may appear dead

How to Treat

  • Seek medical help
  • Move to a warm place
  • Remove wet clothing
  • Warm the body
  • Provide warm drinks
  • Stay with them
